More internet crazies!
The nice thing about being a feminist on the internet is the fascinating people you meet:

In response to this post:
As an unapologetic masculinist living in an overly feminized country this really annoys me. How is it that EVERY male hero has washboard abs and muscular physiques and I never hear a peep from men? Even the ones that are supposed to be skinny have muscular abs and shoulders. This "controversy" is every bit as hypocritical as attacking female models. GET OVER IT! Your insecurities are not interesting to me or anyone else. The only problem with they way characters are portrayed in comics is the LACK OF DIVERSITY. There should be overweight women AND MEN, there should be frail skinny men and women and everything in between. I am so tired of female insecurities played out in the name of "feminism". You do a massive disservice to the women who fought for your right to vote, hold jobs and be paid equally, etc. As for Power Girl- she reminds me of the girl that walks into the party and all the girls start getting catty (read: jealous) because of the male attention she draws. How come you never hear a guy go " Look at that guy's shirt-it's sooo tight". I won't even address your ridiculous statement about how you felt when you saw that cover...
I have to go cry into my Nelly McClung cross-stitched portrait pillow now.

The stupid, it burnsssssssss....

I mean, one minute he's whining about how his issues don't get any airtime, and in the next breath he's dismissing those same exact issues because they're coming from a woman.

Misogyny, excuse me "masculinism", doesn't exactly attract the most smartest bulbs in the bunch, does it?

IIt's like a whole bouquet of stupid. I'm reflexively argumentative, but some people just aren't worth the time.

I'm being sort of encouraged by the outrage over the MJ statuette. It's nice to see fans getting their righteous indignation on.

As an unapologetic twit, perhaps he would do well to examine the cultural construct known as "the male gaze" and how this excludes the male body from being perceived as something to be looked at as an object of sexual gratification almost to the exclusion of any other expressions it might have. Men are not told they must dress sexy or they will not have societal worth. Men are not perceived as having only sexual power available to them. Men are not perceived as "sluts" for wearing tight shirts without anything else underneath.

So, as a man, I gotta ask him if he is aware he's bitching about how good he's got it, and if that is the case, then why is he so unapologetically masculinist, since it's that very mindset that's making him feel miserable?

Gah, the stupid, it hurts.
Betty[info]brown_betty on May 11th, 2007 08:10 pm (UTC)
I have no idea what he's even talking about really. There should be more diversity, because men don't like looking at washboard abs, but women only object because they're jealous?

overly feminized country???

I'm sorry, the stupid caught me there and just wouldn't let me go... Perhaps he's referring to the fact that a breathtaking 0.02% of Fortune 500 CEO's are female? Or that of 60 Speakers of the House, only one has been female? Or that 77% of college presidents are male? Or that women are consistently paid 20% less than men for performing the same job?

Oh, wait, I'm sorry, I was attempting to apply logic to the stupid. My bad.

Betty[info]brown_betty on May 11th, 2007 08:06 pm (UTC)
Well, I'm not sure what his point is. He seems to feel there should be more varied depictions of men in comics…? I would argue that men in comics do enjoy a certain permissible range of bodytypes, but I suppose I wouldn't be opposed to more

Yay for heterocentrism! Because there are no bisexual or lesbian women in the world. And also, yay for sweeping generalizations!

I'm pretty sure you'll see more diversity in terms of body types ( and even facial structure ) in men than in women in comics. I'd like to see a woman in comics whose nose wasn't a tiny little dot in the center of her face.

Maybe I'll do a survey when my week-long break rolls around.

( Also, I just added you as an LJ friend, mostly because you like nutella, and I guess also because you're generally awesome )
Betty[info]brown_betty on May 11th, 2007 10:49 pm (UTC)
I feel a mutual admiration for nutella is a solid foundation to build on.

It's really rare to find women in comics who can pass the silhouette test (Could you separate them from their co-stars as a silhouette?) and although there are men who wouldn't, I think they're the exception. I mean, Wolverine isn't going to get confused with Cyclops, who's distinct from, say, Beast.

I'm going to be the dissenting voice here, and if you want to ignore me that's totally cool because I know sometimes people just want to rant in their LJ, which is fine. Honestly. :)

The "overly feminized country" and a few other statements are dumb, I'll grant you that. He apparently hasn't figured out that tact can make an argument go over a lot better.

That said, he makes an interesting point. There's not much more diversity in male comic body types than females, and probably less, but nobody seems to care. I know I never thought about it before, but then I'm pretty happy to just look at the sexy heroes and wish I was that hot. I and some other fangirls have complained when Flashes are too steroidy, but that's about it. I've heard a lot of girls be very effusive when women characters are drawn chubbier, and be really pissed off when they're drawn skinnier - conclusion being, I suppose, that diversity is good as long as it tends more toward the overweight. I don't recall ever hearing a woman say she wishes men were drawn chubbier. In real life, the vast majority of the time, women are far more critical of their and each other's bodies than men are. Are there some men that are nasty to women because of their bodies? Sure. But women are worse.

And now I'm getting off track and going into one of my pet peeves, so I'll stop here. I'm not saying that guy's right, just that maybe he has one point worth considering if you really want to analyze this issue.

Betty[info]brown_betty on May 12th, 2007 05:22 am (UTC)
Well, actually a couple comments up I am saying that I wouldn't mind seeing a wider range of body-types for men. However, I'll disagree that "chubbier" is the way to go. I want to see a wider range of athletic body types, and there's several allowed for men whereas there's really only one allowed for women.

Women's athletic body types would probably look chubbier, since athletic women don't tend to have tiny waists and pipe-cleaner arms.

I'll grant the desirability of more types of male bodies, but I'm not really inclined to forgo mocking him. His comment was ten kinds of stupid and one kind of reasonable, which is really too low a ratio.

So it's a bad thing that there is little body-type diversity in the DC universe, but all criticisms should be directed in a general way, not at any existing characters, because the way to correct the problem would be to introduce enough new characters who are diverse that the current ones won't be reinforcing stereotypes?

Is that what the person means? It's the only thing I can think of that has any consistency.

Ami-Cat[info]lost_angelwings on May 12th, 2007 03:36 pm (UTC)
That's an incredibly simplistic way to look at the world xD It starts from the assumption that everything is equal and the reason men aren't jealous of other men's looks are b/c men are just well.. better than women and less concerned about stupid things >.>;;

But physical appearance isn't rly the focus for men in our society. At least not in the same way that it is for women. However, you do have men getting jealous about the power other men have, or the money they make, or the cars they buy. >.>;; Honestly, I've never been jealous of another girl's car. Does that mean that I have the right to tell guys who are that they're being silly and setting their gender back? XD

Also, men are muscular in superhero comics b/c they're superheroes.. they're supposed to be in shape. If women looked like women athletes, there'd be no complaints no matter how toned or fit or lacking in fat they were. :) However the women that ARE portrayed aren't in shape at all (note to male artists, breasts are made of fat). Therein lies the difference between how the genders are treated. It's not as simple as jealousy XD
