This is the cover for JLA #10, by Turner. For full view, click. If you're not into body modding, you may find it somewhat disquieting.
Meltzer, here, says, "yes, this is AFTER we asked to reduce Power Girl's chest. I call them the bottled cities of Kandor." A few thoughtful men pointed out that, um, if anyone was wondering why women don't read comics... and uh, also? Boobs don't work that way.
Sample fanboy defence:
there are women out there who look just like Power Girl, they are called Porn Stars. [..] I find it interesting though that so far the people who have proclaimed that this image is demeaning to women have been men. [...] You go on and on about the corporate mentality of DC Comics and attacking them for their 'diversity.' Yet you are attacking them simply because there is a cover coming out featuring one of their characters with large boobs. I for one think this is ridiculous when in the body of their universe as a whole, there is lots of diversity. All encompassing gender, race, creed, etc. [...]See, whereas you're looking at Wonder Woman's ass, Power Girl'sboobs and Supergirl's mid-section, there are some readers like myself who prefer to ignore that sort of stuff to watch Wonder Woman rescue abused women (Wonder Woman #5) or Power Girl recruit new members of a team she believes in (JSofA #1) or Supergirl try to figure out her place in the world (Supergirl #12)
Just because you disagree with the way a character is drawn does not diminish a message that can be conveyed.
Don't judge a comic book by its cover.
[...]
I'm sorry that I don't care enough about why girls are not buying comics. Yes, maybe Power Girl's portrayal has something to do with it. Maybe it doesn't. I don't know. I used to work in a comics store and I had several female buyers. I don't recall a single one of them saying that Power girl was keeping them from buying comics. It was all a matter of taste in what they liked and disliked.
dude. lighten up.it's comics, it's entertainment... it's fun... and ya know what? some girls just have big breasts. How is that offensive to women? And actually, other than the overly thin waistline, the anatomy really isn't that far off... it's comics. People are exagerated. It's the whole POINT!
I don't have any problem with the cover at all. Powergirl just happens to be a female that has large breasts. Just like in the real world women are different shapes and sizes. Plus Powergirl is a person who would wear this outfit. It's just who she is.
Looking at this cover makes me feel like Michael Turner just walked up to me, came on my face, and then left.
Sweet motor-fucking zombies, you invertebrates, it's not about her breast size, it's that apparently her breasts are so crucial that Turner couldn't be bothered to get the rest of her right. Yes, I've seen fucking big-titted women, you perennially-pubescent cretins. In fact, I was able to look above their tits so as to notice how and where they attached to their bodies. Remember bodies? Or as you apparently think of them, the life support system for breasts? Breasts are attached to women's bodies. With connective tissue. These look like lovingly shaded cantaloupes with a slice taken off to accommodate her rib cage. And while we're on the topic, what the hell is up with her rib cage? And her spine? Why do her elbows start parallel to the bottom of her rib cage? What the hell is up with her forearms? She looks like fucking Popeye.
Hugs and kisses,
Betty.
P. S.
I have a low opinion of you.

Someone save Power Girl's people from the egg-laying oppressors. Please. Before we get another cover like this one.

I hope the story where they hatch is done sensitively. Will Peeje feel relief or loss when they leave the nest?

I made it through half the comments before I just gave up. It's sexism bingo with some "Where's The Hater?" thrown in. It's like I said to Dingsi earlier today, "You're ruining their hobby, you're intruding on their fandom, you take everything too seriously...but what about when it's your life? When it's people taking 300 and using it as a glorification of white supremacy? It's in your goddamn (Batman) backyard and there's so much more you can do through understanding over hyperbole."
Hope you don't mind I've friended you.

You know, I try to imagine whether my breasts could possibly look like this, you know, whether I could kind of squeeze them into such a form (only smaller, what with just being an E-cup not a-- what size is that anyway? X?Y? they are about the same size as her ass, aren't they? that is so disturbing) if they were, well, less saggy/flabby tissue and more inherently compressed or something like plastic implants, but even then I think it only works with a sophisticated anti-gravity push-up bra combined with a miniature holoprojector or something.

Someone else made the same sort of comment over on fandomwank, and I was glad. I know I alot of people just don't realize how much big boobs (esp. filled with liquid) can hurt. If the artists' aim was to tantalize, he gets a grade of fail from me.

Yeah, I guess there's some things that seem a lot more appealing if you're only familiar with the benefits and not the drawbacks.

I don't know if the Power Girl meme will make you feel better or not; the picture that starts it is of a woman who's busty, sturdy, and both voluptuous and kickass, and there's several snarky comments about Power Girl's naming, character construction and treatment.

Yes! Ineptly-drawn ridiculously proportioned women infinitely more offensive than eptly-drawn ones.
Then again, I don't think Turner could have gotten the rest of her right if he tried. Perhaps the giant boobs are a diversionary tactic.

How is that even attractive?
I mean, I like girls. I like boobs. I just don't see how these great spheres that look nothing like actual boobs are attractive. Isn't a major component of the sexual attraction to breasts that you should want to touch them? What there invites touch?
(Notice how I'm avoiding the actual subject so as to avoid going into a frothing hormonal rage.)

I mean, really? The main problem is not that she has big boobs. It's not even that she has big boobs and a boob WINDOW which everyone knows they can POP OUT OF. It's that there's no realistic proportion for her breasts. It's that there's no realistic reaction. It's that she doesn't act like "hey I like my big gazongas, so I like this costume, deal with it."
Give me some real reactions.
Which, honestly? Include wearing a bra, which wouldn't fit in what she's got and no one is going to use the Kyrpotinian excuse on me for her not having backproblems. Aren't her boobs from Kyrpton too?
And I don't want my Superheroes as Porn Stars, little fanbrat. I'd like them to be wearing outfits that make freaking sense, just like ALL THE BOYS. I think most women are willing to make concessions about outfits since they've been around forever? But personally I'd like to see Kara in some damn pants.
And PeeJ? A proper bra and realistic proportions.
The two women who did have properly useful and covering costumes were Spoiler and BatgirlII and look what they did to them?
*sighs*
I want to go into the Video Game companies who think that they can make a fully comprehensive choice game (ala Fables), yet not include the option to play as a girl, just like I want to go into the comic companies and smack them with wet newspapers for still ignoring a valid market niche.
Hello? Girls have money too. And lots of them are increasingly spending more and more money on geeky "boy" stuff. So maybe take advantage of that and stop treating girl characters like porn stars that are only there to get captured and saved.
...
And Bring Stephanie back asap! *please*

No, what bothers me is, as you pointed out, the arms. I mean, they're just sort of creepy. Creepy to the point that even if the breast anatomy was perfect it'd be hard to see the image as attractive because you're constantly wondering "what happened to her arms?"
At first I thought they were supposed to be loose-fitting sleeves because nothing else made sense. Then I looked a bit closer at them and they're too form-fitting on the biceps to be loose elsewhere... Maybe she's got a hose-pipe wrapped around her arm under the suit? For... you know... hose-pipe-related superheroing?
I wasn't going to say anything either...
Sighingly,
Ana

Double standards and hypocrites...
As an unapologetic masculinist living in an overly feminized country this really annoys me. How is it that EVERY male hero has washboard abs and muscular physiques and I never hear a peep from men? Even the ones that are supposed to be skinny have muscular abs and shoulders. This "controversy" is every bit as hypocritical as attacking female models. GET OVER IT! Your insecurities are not interesting to me or anyone else. The only problem with they way characters are portrayed in comics is the LACK OF DIVERSITY. There should be overweight women AND MEN, there should be frail skinny men and women and everything in between. I am so tired of female insecurities played out in the name of "feminism". You do a massive disservice to the women who fought for your right to vote, hold jobs and be paid equally, etc. As for Power Girl- she reminds me of the girl that walks into the party and all the girls start getting catty (read: jealous) because of the male attention she draws. How come you never hear a guy go " Look at that guy's shirt-it's sooo tight". I won't even address your ridiculous statement about how you felt when you saw that cover...May 11 2007, 18:26:57 UTC 5 years ago
